Is the Ascher F64 V3 the Best Formula Sim Racing Wheel in 2025?

When it comes to sim racing performance, the steering wheel is arguably the least important part of your setup — at least compared to your wheelbase and pedals. But that raises a question: why do some wheels cost over $1000? And more importantly...are they worth it?

In this review, I’m taking a deep dive into the Ascher Racing F64 V3 — a high-end formula-style sim racing wheel made for serious racers. I’ll score it across four categories:

  • Design & Build Quality
  • Feature Set
  • Ergonomics & Grip
  • Overall Value

Design & Build Quality: Industrial-Grade Strength

The F64 V3 makes an immediate impression with its full aluminum construction. CNC-machined and built like a tank, this wheel screams premium without any of the fluff. The brushed aluminum front plate and engraved branding look fantastic in person.

The rim is wrapped in a high-grip elastomer — it’s not as plush as Alcantara, but the grip level is off the charts. I found it slightly sticky on bare hands, and it collects dust easily, but that’s a minor trade-off for control. With gloves, it feels just right.

The shifters and motorsport-style dual clutch are also milled from aluminum and feel rock solid. Each click has a crisp, tactile feel. This is a wheel designed to last for years.

Feature Set: The Power of 64 (and then some)

The Ascher F64 V3 offers 64 inputs (hence the name), but when you factor in the encoder modes and customization options - you get even more.

  • 14 push buttons (2 recessed for functions like pit limiter)
  • 2 rotary encoders with push function
  • 2 thumb encoders
  • 2 seven-way funky switches
  • 2 12-position rotary dials

With the wireless version (for Simucube), rear toggles let you switch encoder modes — multiplying functionality. You can use one rotary dial for traction control, ABS, engine map, etc., simply by flipping the switch. That kind of flexibility is rare.

The F64 doesn’t have a screen or shift lights. LED screens are a definite "nice to have" on my steering wheel list, but it's always nice to at least have some LED shift lights. This wheel has neither. Without this, you almost need a DDU (dashboard display unit) which can cost an additional $200-$400. Ascher includes multiple button caps, encoder label sets, spare magnets, and optional shifter resistance parts. You can tune it to your exact style.

  • Tons of programmable functions via software or rear switches
  • Rear toggles unlock layered functionality (still can be accessed via the software if you don't have the wireless version)
  • Wireless (Simucube) or USB version available
  • No display or LED lights at all

Ergonomics & Grip: Built for Control

The elastomer material on the handles offer the strongest grip I’ve tested — borderline too sticky without gloves. With gloves on, it feels fantastic.

The 285mm diameter hits a great balance — not too large, not too small - so it makes this wheel viable for either formula or GT racing. It seems like most manufacturers these days are making wheels (even formula-style ones) larger and larger. For me, the perfect formula diameter is 270mm - anything over 280 and it doesn't really feel like a formula style anymore. At 285mm, the F64 V3 is just at the limit. However, even with my smaller hands, I found the paddle shifters to be perfectly placed. I didn’t have to stretch, and my hands never got tired over long sessions.

Best formula-style sim racing wheel in 2025?

Button layout is smart, though the thumb encoders are a bit of a reach in motion. You can get to them with a pinky or hand shift, but it’s not as ergonomic as the rest of the inputs.

Setup is truly plug and play. Whether you're running Simucube or another DD base, installation is simple and well-documented.


On-Track Test: Grip is Amazing

Once I hit the track in iRacing with the F64, I immediately felt the difference. Every input was sharp, precise, and deliberate. The grip allowed me to stay locked in without fatigue. And the paddles? Loud - but satisfying. Actually, these are probably the loudest paddle shifters I've ever tested. I imagine it could be annoying to others because they are definitely loud enough to be heard across rooms. It would potentially be an issue if another family member is sleeping and you want to sim race!

The control layout made it easy to access everything without lifting my hands. That's a big plus if you race in VR. After just a few laps, the wheel felt like second nature. In fact, this is probably the best wheel for VR users. There's no screen or shift lights that you'd need to look at, and the buttons are incredibly tactile.


Value: Premium Price, Future-Proof Feel

At $1,100 USD / 1,099 Euros, the F64 V3 is not for casual sim racers. But for serious sim racers — it’s absolutely worth it. This is a wheel that will stay in your rig for years to come, even as your other gear evolves.

Final Verdict: Built for the Long Haul

The Ascher Racing F64 V3 isn’t flashy — but it’s flawless where it counts. Everything is functional, tactile, and rugged. It's straightforward and to the point.

If you value durability, precision, and performance, this is one of the best formula-style sim wheels on the market right now. It’s earned a top spot on my leaderboard — and for good reason.
